Today, Dr. Nick Chornenki (PGY-5, Hematology) provided a comprehensive presentation on the approach to myeloid malignancies, focusing on diagnostics and early management strategies.
Dr. Chornenki guided us through three clinical cases, beginning with a patient with anemia and splenomegaly ultimately diagnosed with myelofibrosis. He highlighted essential diagnostic tools, such as bone marrow biopsy and molecular studies, and discussed the spectrum of myeloid malignancies, including myeloproliferative neoplasms (e.g., CML, PV, ET) and their distinguishing features.
The talk emphasized the continuum from myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and the early management of leukemia complications like leukostasis, tumor lysis syndrome, and coagulopathy, particularly in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL).
